15 minutes from the center of Retimno is an inconspicuous but very interesting Gorge Miles. For many years in this gorge was the village of the same name, where millers lived with families and produced flour in several dozen water mills. But for the last 50 years the village has been abandoned and people have been resettled in safer areas.

On the bottom of the gorge flows a small river with clean water. Bridges with railings are thrown across it. In many places there are remnants of the Roman water supply system in the form of gutters, on which the water murmurs:

In places where the river forms backwaters, benches are installed so that you can relax in the shade of trees and enjoy the surrounding beauty.

On the other side of the gorge there is a small tavern with a variety of dishes, a menu in several languages and reasonable prices, and its red roof is visible from the road.

Unfortunately, all the buildings are badly destroyed, only the stone walls remind that people once lived here.

This gorge is suitable for all lovers of walking in abandoned places and hiking.

It should be taken into account that the road only one way can take up to 2-2.5 hours. You can go back the same way or reach the end of the highway, get out on the asphalt road and return on it on foot or by taxi. We chose the third path, which we probably will not recommend to anyone else: after 2 hours of travel somewhere below, we were tired and decided not to go to the end or come back. We thought to go to the original bank of the river and climb vertically up on the asphalt road. There were no trails and had to climb quite a steep mountain up that wasn’t very safe. When we climbed the plateau, all pricked and shrub and burned under the sun, we were almost bitten by dogs at the top, guarding the olive plantation, and the plantation itself was surrounded by a fence, which had to be bypassed. In the end, we went out on the road, but the mood was spoiled, and to walk had to walk under the sun to the car more than we expected. In general, next time I would not invent anything and necessarily went on standard routes.

It is obligatory: comfortable clothes and shoes, a lot of water and something from food, if you do not plan to visit the tavern. Downstairs can be cold from water and shade, so it is better to put the blouses in the backpack.
